When RV Refrigerator Repair Is Best Left to the Experts

Many RV owners try to fix their own refrigerators, but in some cases, rv refrigerator repair is best left to an expert. Trying to do too much can lead to even more expensive repairs or an outright purchase of a new fridge. Here are some tips to help you know when rv refrigerator repair is a job for an experienced professional.

Scenario #1 – Refrigerator works on electric (mains power) but not on gas

First, check the breaker to make sure it hasn’t tripped. If it has, reset it and test for voltage on the electric heating element. If the heating element reads no voltage, it may be burned out. If the element does detect voltage, it is possible the circuit board has gone bad, and this will require an expert to repair or replace.

Scenario #2 – Refrigerator cools on gas but not on electric

This one is a little more complicated to diagnose, and again, you will likely need an expert to resolve it. However, if the refrigerator only cools on gas, it means the thermostat (or thermistor) has called for cooling. When this happens, the fridge’s circuit board opens the LP gas valve and sends a high voltage to the igniter that is located above the burner. If the igniter is not igniting, the thermocouple has probably failed and needs to be replaced.

Another thing to check for here is a smell of ammonia. If you notice this, immediately shut off your fridge, open doors, windows, and vents in your RV to increase ventilation, and call for service. rv accessories
